The PERFECT HOLIDAY
• DOES NOT EXIST. Martha Stewart, Rachel Ray and everyone in Hollywood has staff. Lots and lots of people to do things for them that create the illusion of perfection to outside eyes. Holiday perfectionism creates major stress for the perfectionist and those in contact with him/her. If all of your time and effort are expended in creating an illusion, when do you get to feel happy, spontaneous or joyous? Holiday perfectionism may rob you of the very happiness and satisfaction that you are trying to create.
• Solutions
 Sorry, this one does not have a quick fix or easy answer. Some things to consider:
 Why is the illusion so important? (What am I trying to hide/cover up?)
 What do I feel when the illusion shatters (imperfection occurs)?
 What would happen if I let go of the illusion (what would be left)?
 Who taught me that the illusion was to be maintained at the cost of my own happiness?
 Who do I blame for the inevitable imperfections? (Me or them?)
Blaming externals or others for life’s little imperfections stems from victim mentality and control issues – what are you trying to control,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
Blaming yourself for life’s little imperfections stems from poor self esteem, or denial or avoidance of painful memories and feelings.
 Focus on the true spirit of the holidays: instead of creating an illusion of perfection, allow your imperfect self to be of service – volunteer half of the time you would normally spend on your perfection in a soup kitchen or women’s shelter or a nursing home. Follow all the suggestions here to use the other half of the time budget to make the most imperfect holiday you can. Go celebrate at someone else’s house and let their toilet sparkle. Have every gift wrapped at the store, or at the mall or, buy everyone a gift card this year, use storebought cookies. Let the kids decorate the tree completely; no micromanaging where ornaments go. Don’t send out cards to anyone you Facebook, etc. Acknowledge and process EVERY uncomfortable feeling and negative thought that comes up, then release it. Place all your time and attention on being perfectly present in the now.
Now that we have learned what stress is, and how too much stress may hurt us, and now that we have learned the major causes of holiday stress, we need to decide what parts of our memories, lives and traditions truly mean “holidays” for us. We will each have our own answers, and there is no right or wrong answer. Take this question into prayer or meditation and make a list of what matters to you during the holiday season, then pick the top three or four things to focus on. OK, now that we each know what we truly want out of the holidays, let’s begin to look at coping skills and management strategies that will help us create what we want.
There is no time of the year more loved or hated than the holiday season. The holidays create a variety of external challenges and stressors; these external stressors conspire with our internal stressors to create overwhelming and often unrealistic expectations of what a normal, average human being might reasonably accomplish. This evening we will examine the causes of holiday stress, and we will discover what we can do to make changes and manage that stress to create a much healthier, happier season. We will use the Five-Part Harmony Model of Health to understand how an external stressor might have internal effects, and viceversa. We will spend some time on exercises to help us define what we value about the holidays, and finally, we will learn solutions so that we may create more of what we truly value this holiday season.
How do I know I am imbalanced?
If you are having physical symptoms you are probably out of balance. The Personal Balance Checklist is a good place to start. Anyone who has achieved all of the goals consistently in their life is probably self-aware enough to know what part is out of balance if imbalance occurs. They may even have a skill set or tool box big enough to deal with the problem on their own, or to select the perfect therapy to correct the imbalance.
Is everything in your life the way you would have it? If not, at least some of your physical symptoms may have a non-physical root cause. Stress can cause a great many physical symptoms including: chronic pain, chronic infections, fatigue, chronic inflammation, high blood pressure, heart and GI disorders, headaches, etc. as well as symptoms of depression or anxiety. These symptoms may become worse (exacerbate) during the holiday season due to extra stress. Other common, but unhealthy stress reactions include: insomnia, anger, crying, negativity, and increased use of chemicals such as food, cigarettes, alcohol, or painkillers.
Optionals are the invites that come in for smaller parties with casual friends or acquaintances, optional office functions, etc. Anything that starts in your head with “Well, we should go because they…” goes in this column.
Overbooking and Procrastination – Extra Responsibilities and Poor Time Management
We all know how it feels, and now that we’ve learned about unrealistic expectations, we all know how it happens – the to-do list is 48 hours long, and the day is still only 24 hours.
Solutions
• Santa was right – make a list, check it twice, avoid those naughties, and hang out with the nice!
• Unbooking – there are always too many things to do during the holidays and the key to a happy healthy holiday is organization, prioritization, and time management, and lastly, simplification.
• Create a daily holiday calendar and “unbook” it:
Every offer that comes in over the holidays needs to go on the to-do list. The list has three columns:

Expectations
• We perceive and respond to social and cultural expectations that “we should be merry” when the truth is we are overwhelmed and exhausted; we may be dealing with loss or change: this may be the first holiday without a treasured member of the family, or the first holiday “away”, or the first holiday “back” in years. Many people experience “holiday blues”; perhaps due to unresolved family conflict or unpleasant memories of holidays past. The truth is that, for many of us, the holidays may be the saddest, most stressful time of the year. We are our own worst enemy for we create all our expectations in our minds.
• Solutions
 Authenticity – give yourself permission to honestly feel whatever emotions are coming up for you. Even “negative” emotions have a positive message – they tell you when you are “off course”. Once you know you are off-course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you can take corrective action. (If you have trouble accessing, processing or releasing your emotions, or you cannot seem to get back on course by yourself, consider professional guidance.) Unpleasant memories may respond to Holographic Memory Resolution. Therapists and counselors can help with emotional skill-building. Consciously acknowledge grief, loss or change.
 Reality – be realistic about what you truly can and cannot do. Downsize, say no, delegate, stick to time and money budgets (more on all these later).

 Acceptance – NOTHING WILL BE PERFECT – family issues will not magically disappear, recipes fail, weather happens, dogs eat ribbon, cats climb holiday trees and break vintage ornaments, illness strikes, kids eat too much candy and don’t get enough sleep (big kids, too!). Life happens, there’ll be another holiday next year.

Valued Traditions are the things that make it “the holidays” to you and your nuclear family. This group may include things like the annual Christmas Parade or Tree Lighting, caroling in the neighborhood, a really great annual party that you LOVE to attend, Black Friday shopping, baking at home, etc.
Commercialism
• We all complain about it, but what to do? It’s easy to forget what the season is really about –connecting and open hearts, bringing light into darkness, reflection and remembrance. Spirituality creates benefits in mental health and may help relieve stress.

 Creates a sense of connection
 Supports the release of control
 Creates support
 Supports better health (faster healing) and better stress management

 Volunteer or Donate– the recession affects charity organizations, too.
 Coordinate a “giving” tree in your spiritual community – help the truly needy in the community and foster a sense of gratitude for all you have
 Coordinate a “family day” to create gift baskets for a local shelter
 Take 10% of your holiday budget and donate it to charity
 Have “the Talk” with extended family – does everyone really need another sweater? Or does the family want to downsize gift-giving and donate?
 Take the nuclear family caroling in a local nursing home, and distribute holiday cards to residents
 Spend 15 minutes every morning and evening with the Candlelight Breath and Gratitude List exercise

Making the Most of the Holiday Season
So we have reviewed the entire list of Holiday stressors. We know how stress happens, and we have learned strategies to prevent stress from overwhelming us or the holiday season. We have learned that we need to self-care, time manage, budget, set realistic expectations, say “no” and set limits. And most importantly, we have remembered that the true gifts of the season come from Spirit. I sincerely hope you take what you have learned here and create a happy, healthy, meaningful holiday season. And, if this one turns out just like all the others, don’t beat yourself up; you now have a truly useful list of New Year’s Resolutions and can get to work early on the next holiday season!
OVERSPENDING
• Creating and keeping a holiday budget is the easiest way to relieve financial stresses. Budgeting may be complicated by extended family giving habits, a partner’s money habits, etc. Use the four A’s to deal with interpersonal issues around gift-giving and spending, and acknowledge and account for your own unhealthy spending habits, if any. If you routinely go broke on presents, ask yourself some of the following questions:
 Am I buying out of guilt?
 Am I buying to impress others?
 Am I buying because I don’t want s/he, them to think that…..
 Am I buying to make myself feel better? (Suppress/distract from feelings)
• Solutions
 Calculate your holiday budget – do not spend more than you can reasonably expect to pay off in three months for credit cards. Better still withdraw all holiday cash and sort into envelopes – when it’s empty, you are done spending! Identify how much you can afford to spend on the holidays, then divide into categories: gifts, postage, travel, entertaining, etc. If necessary, cut elsewhere – do you need to send paper cards to those you comment daily on Facebook? Might a phone call do for others? Are there homemade gifts or “favor tickets” (good for, dog walking, babysitting, sidewalk shoveling, etc.) do instead? Suggest to the extended family that a gift lottery (secret santa) might be more fun, or a pooled family donation to charity instead of gift exchange. Book inexpensive activities with family and friends (walks, home movie nights, baking nights, tree decorating, etc.) Declare any get-together a pot-luck, instead of providing a full meal.
 Make a list before you shop. Do NOT spend more than $5.00 more than you budgeted for that gift. Do NOT buy anything that is not on the list. Cross off every item you purchase to prevent duplicates.
 Take advantage, as you can, of sales and coupons.
 Recognize that a thoughtful small gift will trump a large, spendy, de-personalized gift every time.
Holiday Stress Solutions:
Health is a matter of choice. We can either choose to acknowledge and honor all the components of a healthy lifestyle, or we can choose to ignore the signals (symptoms) reflecting back to us from our bodies and our lives. There are five aspects of health – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and energetic. An imbalance in any one of these five areas will eventually create imbalance in all areas. An imbalance in any of the five areas may present as a physical symptom! Your body is simply a communication device, and will reflect back to you all symptoms of imbalance. So, whether it is bad diet, unresolved emotional trauma, rigid mental misperceptions, energetic assaults or lack of connection to Spirit, you may well find yourself with a physical symptom. Physical treatments rarely work on mental/emotional/spiritual/energetic problems; one of the clues that a problem is not body-based is you’ve “tried everything” and “nothing works”.

Fatigue – How to Maintain Health Through the Holidays
• The skills of simplifying, reducing expectations, budgeting, time management, and the four A’s will go far in relieving seasonal stressors. Now, all we have to do is take care of ourselves!
• Solutions
 Winter Body Basics:
 Get enough sleep – winter is “hibernation time”, we may actually crave more sleep than usual. Plan and stick to a set bedtime, try to rise with daylight to reduce effects of seasonal affective disorder. A well rested body will be able to resist infections more easily. Consider a 20 minute “siesta”, if possible. Have an established “quitting time”, stop all activity and relax for at least 30 minutes before bed. Do not read or watch TV in bed (distractions).
 Use light therapy and full spectrum bulbs to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], eat a high protein breakfast and lunch and consider taking 5-HTP,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a safe natural anti-depressant (check with pharmacist if taking prescription medications)
 Maintain a healthy eating pattern
 Eat breakfast and include protein
 Eat seasonally – lots of hot, veggie-filled soups with warming elements (garlic, peppers, leeks, onions, turnips)
 Keep healthy snacks on hand as holiday goodies roll into the office
 Don’t skip meals, especially before a party!
 Eat a high-fiber meal before you go to a party, arrive full, nosh less!
 Walk-through the buffet before you get in line; have your healthy choices all planned out before you start to fill your plate; fill plate with single layer of food ( don’t “stack” veggies over rice, etc.)
 Eat small portions of holiday foods you love; deprivation doesn’t work
 Eat slowly, enjoy the food on your plate, skip “seconds”
 Minimize sugar intake – (use stevia where you can), sugar in the bloodstream depresses white blood cell function for hours, which decreases immune system function
 Add in natural sources of Vitamin C (fruits and veggies) and antioxidants
 Hydration – make sure you get in plenty of water (no ice), herbal teas, etc. Limit yourself to one alcohol beverage at a party, then back to water with lemon.
 Leave the party early – you have a bedtime waiting!
 Exercise – use simple substitutes for gym time: take stairs, park at the far end of the lot, walk on your lunch break, walk the mall or around the parking lot before you begin shopping, take stretch breaks instead of coffee breaks, etc.
 Finish showers as cold as you can stand it (50-60° range), for an added boost finish shower with alternating hot and cold: one minute hot, one minute cool; one minute hot, one minute cooler; one minute hot, one minute coolest and turn off! This may improve circulation and supports immune function by creating a “lymphatic pump” which helps white blood cells circulate.
 Consider seasonal herbal support (Check with pharmacist if taking prescription medications):
o Siberian Ginseng, Rhodiola, Holy Basil for stress (adrenal) support
o Andrographis panniculata, withania somnifera, astragalus, garlic, reishi or shitake mushrooms for immune support
o Ginger, gotu kola, gingko for circulation

Family/Trying to Change or Control Others/Unpleasant Holiday Memories
• The truth is there is no such thing as a “normal” family. The truth is the only person on the planet we can hope to change or control is ourselves. The truth is that not everyone has pleasant holiday memories. Everyone gets a little crazy this time of year due to holiday stressors and unrealistic expectations, and family and friends are not exceptions to the rule. What to do?
• Solutions
 Take care of yourself first. Create and maintain healthy boundaries, limits and expectations for family and friends. The Mayo Clinic has created a program called “the four A’s” [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
 Avoid needless stress by making physical changes (plan ahead, time management, budgeting, etc); self-care; minimize time with people who upset/bother you; say “no”; prioritize and only expect to accomplish 50% of daily to-do’s
 Alter if possible by respectfully asking others to change behavior (be aware they may ask you to do the same!); communicate feelings using “I” statements; organize/time manage your day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]; set limits with others up front (“I only have five minutes…”)
 Accept that some things are the way they are. Talk it out with a trusted friend or counselor; forgive yourself for not being able to affect the change you want; forgive the other person for not changing (your anger at them hurts you physically, not them!); keep self-talk positive and encouraging; learn from mistakes
 Adapt – by changing your standards or expectations you release the perception that there is nothing you can do – you can adapt! Adjust your standards; be mindful of thoughts – cancel negative thoughts and replace them with positive thoughts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]; reframe an issue by finding a new reference point (what’s wrong/what’s right); create a positive slogan for yourself (“I’m strong and resilient”) and repeat it silently when the going gets tough; create a list of things you are grateful for and call on that when you get upset – it’s really hard to be grateful and cranky at the same time; ask yourself “Ten years from now will any of this really matter?”
 Apply the four A’s to family and friends – short visits with unpleasant family members; do not offer to house those you truly do not want. If multiple family functions are planned for the holidays, pick and choose which ones to attend, or attend only briefly (30-40 minutes). If you know a family fight always brews after dinner – eat and run! If the fight always occurs before dinner – come fashionably late. Alcohol a problem? – have a dry holiday. Have an “action plan” in place to avoid, distract, defuse any potential family feuds.
 Create new, enjoyable holiday traditions with family or friends to replace events or traditions tainted with unpleasant memories; take time to remember those that have passed and grieve by sharing stories, pictures or heirlooms at the holidays.
 Underbook and say “no” –saying yes when you don’t mean it makes everybody happy except you. Saying “no” honors your current time commitments and relationships, and is part of good time management; it provides opportunity for others to volunteer and build skills and social networks; overcommitted = rundown and creates ill health both short and long-term.

Fill in your calendar first with Obligations, then with Valued Traditions, then with ONE NIGHT OFF weekly, then with Optionals. Try to honor one night off, but use it if you must to play catch-up if the schedule goes awry due to weather or illness. (Alternatively use one night off at home for a family gift-wrapping session, tree decorating or baking session complete with schmaltzy holiday music or TV specials in the background.)

Successfully Managing Your Holiday Stress!!!
• Drop the Shopping! Schedule shopping time, go in with a list and a timer, DO NOT deviate from the list. Organize so that multiple gift purchases might be made in one store or one trip. Set a timer if you shop online and again, have a list, use sites where multiple gift purchases may be made and turn off the facebook link. Always have one or two generic, unlabled gifts or gift cards on hand for “strays” or “forgots”. Combine shopping with other needed errands rather than making multiple trips. Got kids? Split up the extended family shopping list, hand it out at the mall, split up for two hours and meet at the food court – the first one done gets to pick dinner! If you have the option, take a day or two off from work early in November and get your shopping done before the crowds hit, or spend the days baking things that freeze well. Strive to have all your shopping done by the end of Black Friday; you will be AMAZED at how much time this frees up around the holidays.
• Get Help – if time really is money, consider hiring someone to clean, cook, shop, walk the dog, whatever it takes to make time ends meet. Take the money out of the shopping budget and downsize the gift-giving. Super-large family? – gift card your way through the holidays, and consider a heartfelt family letter to all concerned afterwards,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to consider a New Year’s RE-solution for the entire family to slash the shopping to a gift lottery, and donate the rest to an agreed upon charity. Family is full of hard-core shoppers who won’t budge? Not your problem, consider donating in their names or ask them to consider “shopping for others”- creating gift baskets for a local shelter instead of buying more “stuff” for each other.
• Spread the season out – invite smaller groups of relatives over for one night off family activities instead of trying to visit five separate households on the one “big day”. Rain-check Optional invites from your holiday calendar with buffer parties – when is the last time adults got together to dye eggs, carve pumpkins, etc.?
• SIMPLIFY – this last one is so vitally important to a healthy, stress-free life it deserves its own workshop!
 Unclutter – clutter is an ongoing cause of stress and the physical clutter may further represent “clutter” in the mind or lifestyle. Clutter gets overwhelming, and the sheer size of the task can short-circuit the urge to unclutter. Start small, unclutter one drawer or one surface daily. Unclutter one closet per weekend. Get four boxes one “keepers”, one “trash/shred”, one “charity”, one “maybe”. Trash and shred immediately; and the charity box goes out the door the minute it is full. The maybe box, once filled, is sealed and labled and dated. Place it into storage (basement, garage, etc.) if that box has not been opened in one year’s time, it becomes a “charity” box and goes out the door! Ask yourself these questions about every item: “Do I love it?” “ Do I use this regularly?” “Does this lift my spirits?”; if not let it go!
 Eliminate audio/visual clutter – having a radio or TV on “in the background” while you are on the phone and playing MahJong online is multitasking. Multitasking increases stress as the brain is forced to switch back and forth between stimuli. It is further an often deliberate attempt to distract away from one’s thoughts or feelings, which would come to the surface in uninterrupted silence; the distraction prevents one from being fully present in the now moment. There will be genuine symptoms of withdrawal. Limit internet surfing and Facebook time; set a timer. (How many times a day do you check email, facebook,etc. If each check takes one minute, how many minutes is that a day, a week, a month?)
 Clean up the calendar – unplan your calendar (as above) monthly; remember that only 50% of the to-dos will get done, book one night off, and mean it when you say “no”.
 Recognize that multitasking is a illusion – research has shown that multitaskers have poorer concentration and are more easily distractable than unitaskers. Multitasking prevents flow (being in the zone), a byproduct of being fully present in the now moment. Focus on a single task is the beginning of mindfulness, which brings peace, contentment, and clarity.
Obligations include mandatory work parties, your kid’s recitals, homecoming games, concerts, plays, visits with travelling relatives, holiday shopping, needed appointments (doctor, etc.)
How does imbalance happen?
Conventional medicine uses a mechanistic model of health. The body is treated, not only as a machine, but as the sum total of existence. There is no room in conventional medicine for mind/body interactions (unless they are pathological), and so any mental misperception, emotional distress,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], energetic insult or spiritual dissatisfactions are either not recognized, or dismissed as outside the MD’s sphere of practice, or worse medicated inappropriately. Research has shown that about 70% of patients in a conventional doctor’s office are really there because of a mind/body complaint*. We present to our MD’s for our headaches, digestive disorders, back pains, etc. because we have never been taught how to recognize, deal with, or heal complaints of the mind, emotions, Spirit, or energies. As we have been taught no other model, we agree with our physicians that our bodies are to blame for everything we experience.
